Bag versus possession limits

Post by Greg_Cornish »

Is there a possession limit on bass or just a daily bag limit. I asked because I hear of some guy taking 5 bass every day - some off beds and keeping all. Hate to bring this up again but if its legal - its legal. However I'd like to see a movement toward a possession limit if there isn't one. Does anyone know? I don't want to turn this into an argument thread, just get an answer. On the DFG site I only found daily bag limits.

This is covered by the general regulation outlined in section 1.17:

1.17. Bag and Possession Limit.
No more than one daily bag limit of each kind
of fish, amphibian, reptile, mollusk or crustacean
named in these regulations may be taken or
possessed by any one person unless otherwise
authorized; regardless of whether they are fresh,
frozen, or otherwise preserved. Exceptions: See
Sections 7.00, 7.50 (a), 27.60 (e), and 195,
Title 14, CCR.

If a bag and possesion limit is not explicitly noted for the species than this regulation must be followed.

Okay, so if I'm reading it right a daily bag limit means the same a possession limit. In other words a guy cannot possess 6 bass in his freezer that he alone caught?

You can only possess a daily bag limit, while fising in a single day. You can possess a possession limit (which in most cases is a two day limit) over a two day time period and then for the purpose of taking them home. i.e you camping two or more days, etc. Get a copy of the F&G regulations and read the sections that apply. It is not hard to understand. Or talk/call the F&G office in your area and ask them, they will explain it. Bill K :)

I found the regs online in PDF format and found it impossible to understand. So I should probably call Yountville on Monday

That would be the best, then you can be sure that you do understand and not get caught not knowing how they work it. Bill K :)

Just to clarify. Its not to keep from getting caught, its to possibly catch someone else who might be breaking the law big time.

That law is not too difficult to interpret. We have to deal with it during duck season all the time. The daily limit of bass is 5. You may have 10 in your possession but you can not be on the water with 10. So, you could be driving down Hwy 20 with an ice chest full of 10 bass as long as they were caught on 2 seperate days. Once you get to the home freezer situation, you are allowed more than the daily possession limit. You need to have a tag attached with the date the fish were caught, your name, and fishing license number. That is the theory, in practice, Fish and Game would never come into a house to check possession limits unless it were on a tip or an undercover operation.

That's how ducks work anyway. I have about 20 in my freezer right now even though the possession limit is 14.
