OK all of you rod company reps
I am looking for a rod to use fishing deep divers and spinnerbaits..I want one to handle lure weights of about 1/2 to 1 1/2 ounces..I would prefer it to be at least 6 1/2 feet long 7 feet would even be better..Which model would you recommend..

Re: OK all of you rod company reps
Mac. I am not a rod rep any longer, but I would talk with Beichman or go look at the swimbait rod by Okuma for what you want. Steve could make you one just right or you might like the feel of the Okuma and it will double as a great swimbait rod, when you are not using it for those heavy spinnerbaits. Bill K

Re: OK all of you rod company reps
I already have two of the Okumas for swimbaiting..A medium for lighter baits and a heavy for the heavier ones..Can't say that I have had any luck with either so far, but I sure like the way they feel and cast..I was thinking more in the line of a good crankbait rod, composite or glass..I have one for deep divers that was given to me, but truthfully it is a tad on the heavy side, I am looking for something lighter that I san use for both medium and deep divers as well as spinnerbaits..

Hay Mac I am not a rod company rep or anything but I fell in love with the Phenix X10 and X12. Pick on up the next time you are at a tackle shop...... they are very very nice and light makes it easy to fish with all day. I only use mine for cranking.

Re: OK all of you rod company reps
Mac , I have two seperate Dobyn's rods , a 734c that i use for spinnerbaits and a 805cb that i use for deep divers like the dd22 cranks , i really like the 8' rod for throwing the deep crankbaits because you can cast so much further and keep the lure in the strike zone longer .
I noticed that the Dobyn's 805cb glass rod lists that it is for cranks and spinnerbaits , maybe that one will work . I havent personally used one so i dont know . But i have heard alot of guys like the glass parabolic action and the slower reaction time of the glass rod .
If you want to try out the rods above that i have listed just let me know and you can try them out .

Re: OK all of you rod company reps
Take a look at the Spinnerbait series rods by G. Loomis the heavy one for up to 1 1/2 Spinnerbaits is plenty stout but very castable. I use the heavy one for a variety of uses---and find all of the Spinnerbait series superb at spinnerbaits and jerk baits.

The brand new Dobyns 805CB "Randy McAbee" signature cranking rod was designed by McAbees specifically for DD-22s and similar big crankbaits. It is the cat's meow. Give it a look.

Re: OK all of you rod company reps
Mac,
If your looking for something to go up to 1 1/2oz get the Dobyns Champion 805CB. Its an 8ft rod but specs are from 3/8 - 1 1/2oz baits.
If you want to stay in that 7ft range, then I would suggest getting the Dobyns Champion 705CB or 705 CB Glass(offered in the new rods) The specs are from 1/4-1oz baits only, they dont go to the 1 1/2 that you specified.
You also said the glass rod you have now is a little on the heavy side. The new Dobyns Glass rods are VERY light and the diameter is ALOT thinner then anything else out there. I would suggest going to a local dealer and checking out both the composite and glass rods. Bring the reel you will be using and hook it up to get a feel of how it will really feel in your hands. I dont think you will be dissapointed!

Re: OK all of you rod company reps
Mac, I think that what everyone is recomending is fine. However I will try and add my 2cents. When you say up to 1 1/2 oz, I will asume you are referring more to Blades than Cranks. I dont know of to many cranks that weigh that much unless they are lipless. My second question would be are you throwing these heavier baits on lakes or places like the Delta? If they are at lakes I think the Phenix X10 will work great for you. However if your talking the Delta where you may be throwing these baits back into sparse tullies or thicker weeds, I would not recommend a glass or composit rod. But I would recomnd something like the 7'3" Phenix extra heavy Ultra mbx rod. I would hate for you to hook a 5-10lb fish in the thick stuff and not be able to get him out. or should I say increase your odds of getting him out. Here is link to the second page of the Tackle tour review of the X10 mid way down he talks about throwing 1 1/4oz baits with no problem. http://www.tackletour.com/reviewphenixx10pg2.html Unless the Dobyns rods have changed there rating, the 805 cbGlass goes to 1oz and the 805 cb goes to 1 1/8oz not 1 1/2oz. If you have any questions please dont hesitate e-mail me.
Good Luck!

Re: OK all of you rod company reps
Actually, I was approximating the weights..A rod that covers 1/2 to 1 ounce lures would suffice..I would be using it some on the Delta as well as Clearlake and other lakes where a deep diver is recommended..I want it mostly for deepdivers, but also for spinnerbaits..Or would it be better to have a separate rod for spinnerbaits..I have a Kistler spinnerbait rod I use now, but was trying to find something I could double up useage on..

Mac from the sounds of it you might want to go with the Dobyns 705CB. It will cast the heavier spinnerbaits along with the bigger cranks. The 805CB is great also if you can handle the 8 foot rod. Check them out at your local shop and see. One feel and you WILL want one!

Not to talk dock talk or anyting ..... But I got a Powell 806cb for deep crankin' and tossing 1/2oz ~ 3/4oz big hammers in the fall/winnter ... and will convert that rod to throw someones custom made buzz baits on it in the summer hopefully.
Right now I have a Shimano E5 on it ..... will need an E7 with braid on it for the summer.
Just got my new Dobby 735c back from a staffer this weekend. That rod is SWEET !! Gona put a STX on it with #17 Trilene 100% Floro .... and pass on my same setup with the Powell to DeltaLuke.

Re: OK all of you rod company reps
You will have better luck with both baits if you use two different rods. Big cranks a mod-fast action will work better, with blades I prefer a faster rod. Randy McAbee tweeked my 805 and it's now his signature rod a 805 CB RM. It is made for LONG casts with the right power to keep a bait from "tumbling" on the cast. For blades it comes to preferance on rod length, my personal favorite is a 734C or a 764C. If you want to do both with one rod, please take a look at my new 705 C Glass. It is different than any other Glass rod in weight, action, and power.

Re: OK all of you rod company reps
Thanks Gary, I was afraid I might be trying to do too much with just one rod, but I have noticed the basic requirements of recommendations for rods for both of these baits are quite similar and was hoping I could find just one rod for both..What you listed would no doubt work, but it is also obvious you don't think it is really all that great of an idea..Can't blame me for trying though..

Along this line, seeing as I want a rod to cover more than a single application, would it be better to look for a rod to handle deepdivers and topwaters instead..

Mac,
This info is coming directly from a spec sheet of the new line of Dobyns Rods.
I dont know if you would want a glass rod or not so I will give you the specs for both.
Champion 705CB 8-20lb 1/4-1oz Med/Hvy Mod/Fast Action. Crankbaits, Jerkbaits, Sammys, Lipless Cranks. So this will do Top water baits as well as crankbait.
Champion 705CB Glass 8-20lb 1/4-1oz Med/Hvy Fast Action Crankbaits, jerkbaits, spinnerbaits, topwaters. This one will actually cover all 3 techniques you want it to.

Re: OK all of you rod company reps
Mac,
As mentioned it's hard to get a rod to cover a wide variety of applications and also as previously mentioned a lot of your decision on what rod to get is dependent on not only the lure that you are going to be throwing, but also the structure that you will be fishing.
If you haven't already purchased a rod by the time the Rally at Clear Lake comes around you are welcome to use some ESOX Rods during the rally to see which one is most suitable for what you want to use it for.
