84lb Striper
84lb Striper
Anyone here of a striper caught at the Mothball Fleet recently weighing 84lbs??? I heard about it from a friends dad who read it in the Daily Republic in Fairfield.
Re: 84lb Striper
Several east coast states have striped bass state records that are held by fish in the 70-76 pound range. So I guess it's conceivable. I'd love to see a photo and hear the story.
The world record striped bass was caught off the Vermont Ave. Jetty in Atlantic City, during a storm on Sept. 21, 1982 by Albert McReynolds. It was caught on a 5 ½ inch black-back silver Rebel plug. It weighed 78 pounds 8 ounces, and had a length of 53 inches. This fish was estimated to be about 36 years old.

Since 1982 there apparently has been only one striped bass caught and verified that exceeded Albert McReynolds 78.5 pound world record. This fish weighed 92 pounds, and is shown below. This fish now hangs on the wall of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources in Annapolis Maryland.
This 92 pound striper did not become the new IGFA record because it was caught in a net by the Maryland DNR during a research project in 1995.

The world record freshwater striped bass (pictured below) was caught by Hank Ferguson in O'Neill Forebay, San Luis California, on May 7, 1992. It weighed 67 pounds 8 ounces.
O'Neill Forebay is a 2250 acre freshwater reservoir in Merced County, that is part of the California Aqueduct System.

This fish is also the California state record.

Fairfield angler tips scale with big bass
By Ian Thompson
DAILY REPUBLIC SUISUN CITY - It was the catch of a lifetime.
Milton Moats of Fairfield had been hoping for some time to catch a good-sized striped bass when he and buddy Dan Roberts went out fishing early Tuesday morning.
'I wanted to catch a big one by the end of the year,' Moats said as he showed off the fish, which weighed '47 pounds and change.'
Moats has been fishing since he was 5 years old, and the biggest striper he had caught before Tuesday was a mere 28-pounder. This is a good time of year to catch bass, he said, but he didn't expect to get one he will never forget.
The two men were fishing at the mouth of Montezuma Slough about 6 miles south of the Suisun City Marina. They had baited four lines with split-tail fish. At about 1 p.m., the massive female striper struck. It took Moats about 10 minutes to land it.
'It came in pretty easy,' said Moats, who estimated the 'a once-in-a-lifetime' striper is about 25 years old and a rare find in the Suisun Marsh these days.
Striped bass, which are naturally found along the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, can grow to 125 pounds and live 30 years. The largest striper ever caught was a 75-pounder in Atlantic City, N.J., in 1982.
Some passersby stopped to take photos of Moats and the fish. One mother snapped a photo for her daughter, telling Moats that her daughter loves to fish.
After showing off the striper to other fishermen, Moat and Roberts said they will turn the fish into a meal -- or several meals.

How big the striper caught below the rapids by the high school teacher weighed? Seemed it was in the 50-60+ range?
