1/4oz buzzbaits... how many of you throw them?

Post by Guest »

Just curious as I was talking with someone back east via twitter today on G'ville and apparently the big 20lb bags are coming on 1/4oz buzzbaits this time of year on schooling fish. Personally I stick to the Persuader double buzzbait style models myself in the 1/2oz variety and have never thrown a 1/4oz buzzbait in my entire life.

What's your guys take on this? Is this more of an East Coast thing or do you guys find yourself pulling out a 1/4oz buzzbait when on the water?

Vince-all I throw is a 1/4 oz Yamamoto large BB and that is my favorite way to fish when the bite is on. I have had hundred fish days on Roosey using that bait. I think it picks up the bigger bass and you can work it through real trashy areas with braid.

The most productive Buzzbait I have ever thrown is a Strike King Buzz Jr., It is a 1/4 oz bait. I still use it all the time but not it can be a pain in the butt to throw when the wind is blowing

What kind of setup do you use for this? Line/rod/reel recommendations? On the Delta, Clear Lake and Roosevelt I pretty much stick with the 1/2oz persauder double buzzbaits on 17lb P-Line 100% flourocarbon on a 6.3:1 reel and a 7.5' Diawa L&T Flipping rod with a fast tip and plenty of backbone. Haven't lost a fish yet and I have no problem throwing that around the nasty stuff in Roosevelt with wood/trees, etc.

The guy from G'ville was telling me he uses 26lb carbon line on Jackall master stroke rod (fast tip) with a steez 7.1 reel. I haven't seen the new Jackall rods yet so I don't quite know how my setup would relate to his.

I only throw 3/8, to 1/2 oz buzz baits on the delta. And will use the smaller 1/4 oz on lakes like Oroville, Berryessa,......

My favorite is the 1/2 oz model for the Delta because the hook rides lower in the water with a blade modification. I tend to buy buzz baits with a single metal blade (less pricey). I remove the single metal blade, make my own clacker and install a four wing plastic clear blade. This gives the buzz bait a quick lift to the surface with about a half turn of your reel. The quick lift also prevents the lure from sinking into the rip rap or weeds. It really comes over the top of the mats without loosing too much action. It's my favorite low tide bait. Add a trailer to the front hook and install a stinger hook. Stripers enjoy it also.

I use a Loomis MBR844c rod, 65# braid, and a DHSV Shimano 7:1 reel. I also use a Zoom split tail trailer and a trailer hook. Works for me.

1/4oz buzzbaits are very popular here in Texas. I'm old school and like a 6' MH rod with a long grip and 17lb mono, but I also throw like a girl. :D I believe the stretch in the mono helps on the hookset by slowing things down a bit. I've tried buzzing with braid and missed way too many fish.

Yes on the Delta in areas after the spawn with a lot of fry. The smaller profile mimics the little guys pretty well.
