15lb P-Line CXX for Super Spook?
Is 15lb (.016 in) P-Line CXX too light for throwing Super Spooks in mostly open water? With the water levels so low in the lakes I fish there's barely any visible cover. I'm more concerned with getting good hook penetration on a long cast. I've been using 17lb (.0165 in) CXX without any issues. I'm using a Dobyns 733C, which doubles as my spinnerbait rod. This time of year I drop my spinnerbait line down from 17lb to 15lb since weed growth has died off, but don't want the 15lb to adversely affect my hookup ratio with the Super Spook.

I use 12lb with no issues, I have great hook up ratio.

Braid on top water. It floats and it cast a mile plus on the hook set there is no stretch. However there is a learning curve on working your bait so you won't catch your line. I belive its a reaction bite on the surface and since your line is floating it shouldn't make the fish line shy. thanks jim

I use braid for frog's. It catches the hooks to much on other top water lures for me..

30lb braid with four or five feet of mono at the business end to avoid tangling the front hook. Basically a scaled down version of what I throw a punker on. Uni to uni connection between the two lines. This works really nicely for me. Mike

If you aren't having any problems with 17lb test why change up? If you don't mind my asking.

I've gotten into the habit of downsizing my line when there is less cover. Plus 15lb CXX is a little more manageable than 17lb. If I had one rod dedicated to Super Spooks I'd leave it with 17lb, but since I also us the rod for spinnerbaits there's some compromise.TomAtkeson wrote:If you aren't having any problems with 17lb test why change up? I dont understand why you would use anything less than 30lb-50Lb braid...i mean why risk breaking 12-15lb mono/floro... ur using topwater its not like the fish see your line.

try upsizing the braid ... smaller line test braid feels like a thread ... go to 65 or 80#'s and it feels more like regular line! Just IMHO ...cib11b wrote:I use braid for frog's. It catches the hooks to much on other top water lures for me..

Like many before me, try using braid. I use 50# braid, it has the diameter of 12lb mono.

Paint the last 12" of your braid with ChapStick or candlewax to prevent the line from catching the front hook on a topwater. We used to use it all the time for mono when throwing prop baits back in the day, and it works just as well on braid.

15lb CXX is plenty strong even if cover was around. I had a (lb strped bass spool me on 12lb cxx, hook a right around some wood pilings, then pull more line.
I got that fish it with my LUCKY CRAFT RIP BAIT!!!!

I tried to use fluorocarbon with a spook an my line sinks so I stick to braid, better action on the spook if your line doesn't sink. I could be wrong though I'm still green at this.
Put better hooks on ..
Take those factory hooks off and trick them out with BETTER hooks.
It will UP your hookup rates, and KEEP the fish pinned on.

Re: Put better hooks on ..
Oops sorry thought P-Line only made fluorocarbon. See told you I was green

Re: 15lb P-Line CXX for Super Spook?
I only use 65# Spider Wire Stealth on ALL my top water lures, spooks, frogs, buzzbaits, popr's....Everything!!!!!!!. Also I use a black felt tip marker and color the line from the lure up ,,,, about 5 to 6 feet. Zero stretch, floating line, and super positive hook sets....Clay
Re: 15lb P-Line CXX for Super Spook?
I ask this every time it comes up, why color the line with a felt pen? What exactly is it doing for you? If anything it seems like it would make the line more visible than it already is.
Re: Put better hooks on ..
They also make co-polymers, but no nylon mono.bassaddicted wrote:Oops sorry thought P-Line only made fluorocarbon. See told you I was green
