For
the next installment in the Rat-L-Trap Rundown with Mark Daniels Jr., the FLW
Tour pro gave his suggestions on choosing the right rod. Here is what he had to
say...
'TRAP TIP
#5 - Right Rod
The
rod that I use to fish a Rat-L-Trap is very important to me. Personally, I like
to use a graphite composite rod. A lipless crankbait is a lure that gets bit a
lot, but it is also easy to lose a lot of fish with them and often times this
is because the rod is too stout and it pulls the hooks.
When
picking a rod (regardless of the brand or price point) make sure that it has
some tip to it. You don't want to throw a Rat-L-Trap or a square bill crankbait
on a stout or stiff rod. It should definitely be something that has a really
nice parabolic bend and has a slow moderate tip on it. You don't want it too
fast, you want one that bends nice and slow. This is important when fishing
moving baits, because we have a tendency to overreact to a strike. When we're reeling
in the bait and a fish hits it, our first response is to jerk on it, so we need
a rod that is slower to compensate for our action.
Myself
I like two different rods, depending on the size of the 'Trap.
For
the 1/2 oz, I use a 7', medium-action Kistler
Magnesium graphite composite rod. I pick this length, because it makes accurate
casts, yet still has enough tip to it. I can get a good distance on it.
For
bigger 3/4 oz ones, I use a 7'11 Kistler. It is a
much longer rod and has more power. The power allows me to plant the hooks of
the heavy into the fish.
