For fans of new fishing gear, fall is often the best time of year. Many new products unveiled at July’s ICAST event are beginning to hit the shelves and are ready to be purchased and put to work on the water. The new rods include the Victory and Legend Bass rods from St. Croix and Daiwa saltwater rods and the Proteus saltwater and Beefstick surf rods.
Victory Rods by St. Croix
One of the premier rod companies in the world, St. Croix, developed the new Victory series with the input of bass anglers everywhere. They’re available in spinning and casting models and have tremendous technology and features at a reasonable price.
The blanks are a carbon fiber SCIII+ that is a high-modulus design for power, strength, and light feel. They have Fuji Concept guides and Fuji reel seats and best of all, they’re made in America.
The spinning models include eight different rods and feature everything from medium-light to medium-heavy in lengths from 6-foot, 8-inch to 7-foot, 10-inch.
For casting rods, they feature the same excellent materials and technology and have the same retail price. The number of available rods runs the gamut, with 17 different rods to choose from. Included in the bunch are everything from a 6-foot, 8-inch model for jerkbaits and topwaters to a magnum 7-foot, 11-inch heavy for power techniques like flipping, pitching, and punching. There are also several cranking rods for all of the most popular crankbait styles.
Legend Tournament Bass by St. Croix
The popular legend series from St. Croix received a makeover with new design elements and materials. All the rods are dialed in for specific techniques and are available in spinning and casting models.
Among the features are several blank reinforcements that make them extremely strong yet lightweight and sensitive. They also have Fuji K-Series blanks and Fuji reel seats. The rods have cork handles, both split and full-grip, depending on the model and the rods are built in Park Falls, Wisconsin, with a 15-year transferrable warranty.
The casting models include versatile options like the 7-foot, 1-inch medium-heavy “All-In” rod and “Workhorse,” a 7-foot, 3-inch medium-heavy. For the crankers, there is a 7-foot, 2-inch medium “Finesse Glass Cranker” up to an extra-heavy 7-foot, 10-incher they call the “Mag Cranker.” The casting models retail between $300-$340.
On the spinning side, a 7-foot, 1-inch medium “Versatile” rod and a 7-foot, 10-inch medium “Swimming Baits” rod are two of the five models carried by Fisherman’s Warehouse. They retail between $290-$335.
Daiwa Proteus
The Proteus name is synonymous with Daiwa saltwater gear and the newest version features Winn Grips in a cool camo design. They are offered in four models (7-foot heavy, 7-foot, 4-inch extra-extra heavy, 7-foot, 6-inch extra-heavy, and 8-foot, 10-inch heavy), depending on the model.
One of the unique things about this version of Proteus is the use of Winn Grips, which offer an excellent grip for the angler in all weather conditions. They are comfortable and come in a camo pattern.
The rods are packed with quality components and some of Daiwa’s technology to make them strong and sensitive. Included in them is the Braiding X technology that offers higher strength and reduced weight. Also developed into the rods is the X45, which helps to eliminate blank twist for more power and durability. The Proteus rods also have Fuji’s premier K-Series guides that are smooth and braid-proof.
Daiwa Beefstick Surf Rods
As you can guess from the Beefstick name, these rods are rigid and built to withstand anything. Daiwa’s two primary focuses when developing this rod were power and durability. These rods are made for the surf fisherman and come in seven different models, ranging from an 8-foot medium to a 12-foot extra-extra-heavy power.
They are two-piece models made of a fiberglass blank that includes heavy ceramic guides built to withstand braided lines and big fish. The Beefstick rods include a stainless hooded reel seat and EVA grips designed for a comfortable and slip-resistant grip.
Another major plus for the Daiwa Beefstick is the affordable price point. The shortest model retails for just $44.99 and the longest version is just $59.99. The seven models include the two mentioned above, and a 9, 10, 11, and 12-foot medium-heavy and an 11-foot extra-extra-heavy.
