Yak-a -Bass held their second team event at Don Pedro Lake. The weather was perfect for the pre-spawn bass in search for the shallow spawning areas. A few anglers found the fishing good and a few struggled to get bites, it just depended where and what they were and what they were doing while searching for the magical areas. The team Punisher (Damian Thao and John Myers) pushed their way to a win fishing for pre-spawn fish with a nice limit of 91.50”.
Damian Thao stated, “Fishing this format was exciting because one angler could fish for the limit while the other angler could search for the longer fish using bigger baits.”
“John and I practiced the day before but I had found fishing tough; however, John was hammering them with tubes and jigs.” said Thao, “On the tournament day the fish changed up and wanted the bait pulled up hill with a Neko Rigged Senko in Green Pumpkin.”
“I couldn’t get bit pulling it downhill so I moved shallow and was able to trigger the bass into biting.” stated Thao, “Also, during practice the fish didn’t want the spoon but during tournament day, the fish wanted the spoon.”
“I caught several nice fish on the spoon during the tournament.” communicated Thao, “I had found a huge school of big fish that were competing for the spoon which made the fish easier to catch.”
“I was fishing from10 to 30 feet deep.” voiced Thao, “It was nice to find that huge school of big fish with my forward-facing unit. It was quick and fast once I had found the mega school of fish.”
“The cadence of the spoon was a slow pull once the spoon was near the fish.” verified Thao, “The fish were schooled up tight so the bites were fast once the lure was near the fish.”
John Myers stated, “It was a nice ride on Damian’s coat tail to the win.”
Thao thanked Pline, First Gen Fishing, 559 Fresno Bait and Tackle, Kayak City, Drink Crazy and my team partner John Myers.
John Myers thanked Pline, First Gen Fishing 559 Fresno Bait and Tackle, Stage Shop Gun Shop, Headwaters and his team partner Damian Thao for the sweet coat ride during the tournament day.
Team “The Bassholes” (Dustin Brown and Toliy Kash) came in second with 88.75” Dustin Brown practiced the day before and caught around 40 fish on bottom contact lures.
“I caught around 40 fish using bottom contact lures but most were in the 15-to-16-inch range.” said Brown, “I did catch one that went 19.50” in the back of a cove.”
“I decided to start in the cove where I had caught that 19.50” bass." stated Brown, “I started about half was back into that cove and caught 7 fish total during the tournament hours.”
“I tried to catch those fish that were in the back of the cove but they were not willing to bite.” said Brown, “I was using my forward-facing unit and could see the school of fish but they just didn’t want to bite.”
“My partner was fishing a different part of the lake and had lost a few fish on the chatter bait and other bottom bouncing baits.” said Brown.
Brown thanked Yak-a-Bass for hosting these team events, James and the gang for all their hard work. My wife for all her support and a big shout out to my grandparents for their support. Toliy Kash thanked Yak-a-Bass for hosting the team events.
SHISHIAH place third with 83.50”. Shaun Leytem and Isiah West fished on complete difference ends of the lake. West fished the river while Leytem fished near Fleming ramp area. They practiced fished three days before the event.
“I practiced for three days spending 2 of the three days launching at Moccasins and one day launching out of Fleming ramp.” stated Leytem. “I caught fish both days in the Woods Creek area and up towards the log jam upriver.”
“Meanwhile, only catching fish up to 18” launching out of Moccasin's ramp, I decided to check the Fleming area.” stated Leytem, “I found larger fish near Fleming so my game plan was to launch from there.”
“Our game plan was to have one team member launch out of Moccasin’s ramp while the other team partner was launching from Fleming ramp.” reveled Leytem. “I was using a Yum Sonar Minnow on the Frenzy Baits FFS jig head and a Senko around the house boats.”
“My partner West, caught our big fish under a house boat in the Moccasin’s ramp area.” commented Leytem, “The bite did change from our practice fishing.”
Leytem and West thanked Yak-a-Bass for hosting a great event, RBBass Outdoors, Lear Dry wall, Dobyns's Rods, Roboworm, Yamamoto Baits, Propoint fishing lures, GRatt Baits and Jesus Christ for keeping us all safe on the water.
