Q&A With Gary Dobyns & Brice Boseman

Q & A - Anyone with questions please submit to info@dobynsrods.com.These will be answered by Gary and Brice Boseman. A few will be selected each month for the newsletter. Some anglers don’t like their names posted so we’ll use first names only. If you’ll include your location, we will post name and where you’re from. An example would be: Mike from Dallas, TX.

Q - Is there a model that’s a must have? If so, why?

A - The most versatile model is the Champion XP Series DC 734C and it comes in both split and full handle versions. I originally made this model for my personal Super Spook rod. It quickly became a top seller and many anglers’ favorite model. What makes this rod so special is it’s fast but not so fast that it can’t handle moving baits as well. I always keep an extra 734C in my rod locker for the unexpected. My best memory on this model was the U.S. Open that I finally won. I needed a jig rod the last day of the event. I had been throwing only reaction baits but the last day I felt the need to jig fish late in the day. I have several models that I prefer to jig fish with over the 734C but I hadn’t brought any of them with me this day. I knew the 734C would do the job just fine, and I ended up with big fish money on a jig. I remember this day well. I finished the day with 5 rods on the deck and 4 of them were 734C models. I had the following baits on them: a Super Spook, a spinnerbait, a buzzbait, and a jig. -Gary Dobyns

Q - What’s the most popular series of rods?

A - In pure sales numbers per model, it’s the Fury Series, but the Champion Series is the backbone of the company. This series also has the best following of anglers, the most models, and has everything that’s needed for bass fishing. Every technique is covered well with Champion models. - Gary Dobyns

Q - What’s the difference between the 0 and 1 power rods in the Sierra Ultra Finesse Casting Series?

A -The main difference between the two powers is the 0 powers offer a solid carbon fiber tip that inlays into the graphite for a smooth transition to the tip. This type of tip is perfect for finesse style “treble hook” baits. The 1 power rods are GREAT all round Finesse casting rods. They are perfect for the tiny Ned rigs, Texas rigs, and other bottom contact techniques. With a solid tubular blank, the 1 power rods will handle all your Finesse casting needs. If you’re just getting into the Finesse casting side of bass fishing, be sure to check out the Sierra Ultra Finesse Casting Rods on the Dobyns website. - Brice Boseman

Q - What rod is the best for dropshotting? I want the best that you make. I will be using 6- & 8-pound test fluoro.

A - Our best would be the Xtasy Series DRX 722SF. It’s a very popular model for the dropshot technique and, in the West, it works well with dart heads and tubes, too. - Gary Dobyns

Q - My child’s high school fishing team needs a fishing rod sponsor. What do I do?

A -Great question. At Dobyns Rods, we love to support the youth that will, in turn, be our future. We partner up with high school and even college teams to provide sponsorship. The best place to start is by sending an email to info@dobynsrods.com with your inquiries. We will promptly reach out with the information needed to get your school’s fishing team set up. -Brice Boseman

Q - What are the most popular Carolina rig rods for summer fishing?

A - Two rods that really stand out are the Champion XP Series DC 764C and the Champion Extreme HP Series DX 784C. These two rods are HOT when it comes to summer time dragging. Both are phenomenal rods for dragging anything from a Carolina rig to a football jig. You get the feel and sensitivity that you’re looking for, and, also, a perfect balance from tip to backbone. They allow light wire hooks to stay pinned, but have plenty of backbone to drive a heavy jig hook. Both rods are versatile and can be used for other techniques as well. -Brice Boseman

Q - I was replacing the tip on my Fury 703SF. The graphite is now soft and I can’t replace the tip. A friend said I cooked it and I shouldn’t have used a torch on the tip. Can you fix this rod? What are my options?

A - Here are your options. We can warranty it under the No Hassle Policy and replace the rod. We can also cut the blank back ½” to ¾” and re-tip the rod. It will change the feel just a little bit. I like to respace the last couple of guides when doing this. This actually happens far more than people would think. First off, never use a torch when changing a tip guide, use a Bic lighter. Also, if you haven’t changed a tip before, most tackle shops provide this service. Once you’ve seen it done one time, you’ll be able to do it again in the future. I haven’t looked but I’m sure something is available on YouTube showing a tip guide change. My good buddy Lynn Williams of Williams Custom Rods designed a Tip Removal Tool. It’s simple, costs $10 retail, and makes it impossible to wreck a rod tip. You can find it here on our website, or call us at 903-919-8028. -Gary Dobyns
