Tuck - Damn Sea Lions!
Tuck - Damn Sea Lions!
I finally seen it with my own eyes, I was leary at first because I have watched them eat cats and stripers for years, but never LM. There was a sea lion working off shore in Frank's yesterday. He was feeding heavily so I cruised out to see what he was eating. Sure enough in about 10 minutes I watched him eat 3 LM bass over 4# each. The biggest was about 6# and he had to tear it up, but the other two were about 4# and he was able to swallow them whole. I have watched them for years and this is the first year I have seen one targeting LM. With no weed cover the bass are easy picking.
Anyone have an Killer Whale feeding track for their BioSonox unit?

Re: Tuck - Damn Sea Lions!
Hey don't worry about it Dewayne,
as you can see by my post about the weed killin that I started a few days ago nobody else seems to be. They have always been here, more escape(the bass) than they catch (the sea lions),don't worry about tomorrow live for today-blah,blah,blah.
I think we are gonna have to take more measures to get those fish away from the tract.Like makin' the release boats go to the main channel for dumping.Anything that will get those fish out of the shallow water where those lions do what they do best.
You bet they have been eating bass.I've been watchin them thrash some of Stich and Fontes water since duck season started. Not sayin that's a bad thing , but come on all we're doing is feeding them!!

Oh Yeah ,
I forgot to tell Mike that those fish will never make it back to the Break when the weeds are gone. The SDIP (South Delta Improvement Project) will see to that.Check it out on the DWR website.Looks like they'll be headin' east or south so Mike- No Soup For You

Simple solution, git smart like I did this weekend. See a sea lion feeding in Franks Track, head over with yer Senko and start catching them fish and relocate em! That Sea Lion has stumbled onto a nice colony of spawning bass, something most of us are unable to do in the middle of Franks by ourselves with out stealing someone elses spot and good fortunes. 3 anglers can hawl off a lot a bass in an hour and magically, the sea lion leaves the area!! Mother nature, it's a beautifull thing. Kinda ironic, we can hunt ducks and geese, take advantage of their stupidity in the fall, an nobody thinks anything of it. We can watch sea lions gorge on Salmon, stripers and cat fish, think nothing of it. But eat the black bass, NOW we need to take action.

BrothA Coochster ..... If I can interpet for James, Dewane, Mike, Myself and other have been saying for years .....
The Sea lions AND THEIR CURRENT POPULATION are WAY out of check !! 24 years ago -- it was truly a site to be seen to have two wayward sea-lions show up in Kellog ..... Now it is a seasonal occurance with them staying 3 months or longer sitting on the same spots where they continue to rape the fisheries."Restoration- It is the key to Habitat and it's Preservation where Natures Game can take it's Refugation- as long as there is not Conservation that kills off the Hunting/Gaming Equation- leading into Unmanned Depredation of Natures Transformation ." (*** An Original ~ Coors Light induced .... Lifetime Thought for this Crazy State. )
It ain't about re-locating the fish ........ It is about Relocating up to and including Extermination the Sea Lions that are where they are not supposed to be.. And keeping "Nature" in check.
Wana look into what the Un-Checked Mountain Lion population has done to our deer heards as well ??
S S and S ........... Only The Delta has more onlookers and blubber floats.

Need to get some larger organizations to begin lobbying Washington to change the marine mammals act before all salmon, steelhead and every other fish are gone and nothing but sea lions and granola crunchers left. We got the grey wolf delisted so they can be hunted as varmints and the same could be done for Slappy the seal if there is enough organization behind it. Let me know and I will run over to bag a trophy or two. Maybe the giant kitty called the mountain lion will eat enough tree huggers to finally convince voters not to mess with game management. Good luck.

I don't buy it! This by far, 2008, has been the most phenominal season for bass fishing that I have ever experienced here. Heck, I even won two tournaments with you my friend!!!! But hey, wuda I know, I've been wrong before, guess I'll just go enjoy while ya'll fret over the sea lions.DeltaDan wrote: [BrothA Coochster ..... This is 'bout "protecting" what we currently have.
Seen it happen over the last 15 years with our deer population in CA vs. Mountain Lion AND bad water/spring years in the high country,
Watched it Frist hand so I can no longer afford to Abalone Dive with the restrictions form when it was 4 per person per day.
Watched the Kalifornia Govt assist in dwindling (along with mother nature the last 3 years) screw over the Pheasant population in mosquito eratication durring the spring with spraying for West Nile ~ killing the spring bugs necessary for the chicks survival. ~~ Along with the price of Beef going up and the private owners also destroyed the overall cover as well leaving all the years of Pheasant Forever looking like stunned Caulliflower after all the years of work they did -- wiped out in 7 months.
Now along with the poachers -- Our Abalone are being descimated by the unchecked "protected" population of Sea Otters as well.
We are all watching it happen with our Salmon -- and the Govt. is FINALLY taking steps to "hurt" some sea lions looking for an easy meal at the spill way in Oregon. ~~ They are doing this by BANNING the fishing of ALL Salmon.
I'll offer again to take you out Phesant hunting .... You don't have to hunt -- Just show you the change on your island first hand -- compared with how "it was" in all the years past. I'll even supply the Agel Packs for our 10 hours of brush bustin'. ..... Then we will pick up come chickens and put them on your smoker at the end of the day.
"A Bass is a Bass is a Bass" -- I fully understand that an more than appreciate all of that !! All I am saying at the same time is that a Salmon was a Salmon, a Deer was a Deer, An Abalone was an Abalone ....... and Screw the Smelt !! -- The cost is to high to not keep SoCal watered !!
--- How about 2018 ? -- How will the fishery be then when there are not steps to protect it further by Govt.s Inaction on their WRONG actions-- from what we could be doing today as we should of already done yesterday as History is our best teacher ?? ~~ And MOST IMPORTANTLY ~~ Without GOVT. IMPOSED Restrictions on the Sportsman in the years to come !!!!

I went to Pier 39 a while ago and saw soooo many of em... like roaches, laying on every single dock and anything else they can flubber onto....... I agree, along with the weed killing program,, I think these SL'S are gonna have a definate long term negative impact on our fishery...... this year's great,,, next year and the years to come,, who knows................... now just wait till them giant stripers move through in the fall... no weeds in or around the Tract.... lot's of 1-3lb largies will become striper food.
I say we group together and pay some over educated biologist type person to publish a study about SL'S being the real culprit for the Delta Smelt decline.... then maybe a humane extermination / relocation project may get underfoot

Been to three DFG Commision meeting myself and the one local to me commision meeting for the inputs Sturegon research/input meetings.
Mountain Lions, Poachers, Sea Otters, Sea Lions, Mitten Crabs are all Preditors that don't care what they RAPE from us ..... and all could be managed correctly by wise Goverment that would give a dam and put some monies into the pockest of those agencies THAT KNOW the story in the first place..

I say we totally pay a crooked filthy lobbyist to get a law passed to kill em and make fur coats and slippers out of em! As for now I fish along and watch in disappointment. Not even cool. I thought last year was abnormal but this year its on a whole new level. I dont think the delta will ever be fishless though in my honest opinion. Its just so full of fish its unbelievable. Except for the days I struggle to get bit! Then I think there are none out there! Nature will always take its course regardless of our human intervention. There is always an equalizer to keep the balance!

Re: Tuck - Damn Sea Lions!
Simple question , are they native ? , You don't think the fact that we have 300 million people in this country has anything to do with nature getting a little out of whack ? How do you manage nature ? it does a pretty good job on its own it's own I'll bet poacher's far more affect the wildlife populations than the natural predators do . How about if every fisherman you saw on the delta took his legal limit of bass every time he fished . It just kills me when people start to get whipped up over nature doing its thing .Whats it matter ?

Re: Tuck - Damn Sea Lions!
Sounds like one of those bank fishermen in whiskey got P.O'ed and busted a cap.
This is sort of where my post the other day was coming from. The stripping of bottom cover in Franks has made a way too friendly environment for those sea lions, and I'm sure it has made life that much easier for that growing flock of cormorants and pelicans. I can't remember ever seeing a pelican let alone a whole flock of them when I started spending time on Frank's over 20 yrs ago.
The question now is what to do about it.
Andy talkin' about salmon, stripers,or catfish is gettin a little out of direction.Salmon, steelhead, and stripers all spawn upstream for the most part. Catfish are so widespread and diverse they can and will spawn on an old tire. These bass in question are the cream of the crop and should be viewed as such.Franks has had all major tourneys for the last 6 to 7 yrs bringing together a gene pool of the best this river has to offer. You know this. You saw what this process did for big break when it was tourney central, and you saw the records that went down during the FLW events to verify that this is true. I understand they can't eat'em all,but this is comparable to lettin' the foxes in the hen house with the prize birds. Those bass are in plain sight with no cover, guarding nests.Won't take long to buzz through those and they don't need to leave till the foods gone. They don't need licenses. They don't have bag limits. THEY DO NOT PRACTICE CATCH AND RELEASE!!! THEY EAT 365/24/7!!!
Aside from killin the damn things I'm not sure even fish and game would have an idea what to do about them.
Good move though relocating those fish.I think that will become a routine we might all be wise to follow.
As far as the stupidity of waterfowl these days it sounds like you haven't been to a duck blind in a while there Coochie Bin Snoozin'!!!

someone needs to prove that they are eating the endangered delta smelt then they will do something or my second choice would be non lethal bean bag guns if everyone had 1 of those they would relocate back to the ocean real quick
Re: Tuck - Damn Sea Lions!
That would indeed be an effective solution. After the lions head for the hills, it would be a tossup as to whether wakeboarders or float tubers would be next on the menu. In any case, if a GW swims up to my bass boat I am moving away quickly and probably selling the boat.Fred Fullerton wrote:Guys all we need to do is bring in some great whites and the lions will leave in hurry...
I vote for Orcas, anyway, since they seem to be curious/tolerant of people and less likely to eat them. You'd think if the occasional humpback makes his way upriver the black and whites would follow suit.

I was once fishin in Piper(By the opening into little franks at the rotting dock) and fishing the rock wall. Well I saw a Sea Lion swimmin around and said "well this place is done!" I Pull up my TM and sit down start up the motor and start to gettin on my way then I see it closer to the rock wall I was just fishin at. Next thing you know it pushes a school of bass all 4-6#'s up on the bank just like the bass do with shad. I was pissed because I hadnt got to fish that section yet and I was just a few short yards away from them and then the sea lion pushes them up!

Re: Tuck - Damn Sea Lions!
This loss of weeds and sea lions is a serious matter. They remove the grass to move more water. They are the fat cats. The seals are there because thier food supply has been destroyed in the ocean. If the mountain lions have no dear they come down and eat your pets. The seals need to go now because you guys have a special place to fish down there. James is also right about moving the fish. Without the weeds the fish are moving more to find food and the bigs girls are getting easier to catch..When the crash comes it will be hard. Ban together and save your paradise. guess I will go to Melones and watch the beds go dry as the water drops.

Re: Tuck - Damn Sea Lions!
Anybody keeping track of how many bass are being released in given areas on the delta during tournaments?...Can a given area sustain the bass population if 50,000 bass are released say for a year in that area?...Is there enough bait in the area to sustain a increase of bass in the area and keep it healthy?...Just asking...
How about the bait...I've seen what no weeds can do to schools of shad...They have nowhere to hide...A school of stripers can just push and push the bait until the bait school declines in numbers...In my opinion, the top shad producing area on the California delta is the Stocton Turning Basin and surrounding tributaries...
Those docks up there and deep water are a big help to the shad...We've seen tons and tons of shad at night on our graphs and when daylight hit, you couldn't find one shad on your graph?...Where did they go?...They hid under the dock system during the day that runs all the way down to Stockton Rod and Gun...
Be careful, when things seem to be going so good on the delta, that's when things seem to fall at a dramatic rate...Nobody is watching the hen house when it seems there are a lot of hens around...One catastrophic event, and things can change...I was at Vieira's working when the salmon fishing was exploding over there...What now, anybody want to buy some Wiggle Warts next year?...Go out to Contra Loma and ask Bob to buy all the salmon spinners he made up, $.25 cents sounds like a deal to me...
Ask Xman how good it was at the Elbow on Hwy. 4 for deer years back...Didn't even see a deer the last time we went up that way...Yeah, the bass fishings great right now but it could change too just like the other species have...

Re: Bass On The Menu For Sea Lions ?
Yeah I agree if the grass and weed are being killed off for the water to move more efficiently for the Canals to pump is not in my book the most ethical way of my tax dollars to be spent.
How this in general will effect the overall population of Lm in the Delta ?
No more than 2oo boats in a FLW tournament catching limits of fish over a three day tournament and those fish being realised to various locations ?
Let me ask you a Question ? How has the tournament fishing in Clear Lake over the years effected the fishing there as far as the larger ones go?, oh sure there are plenty of small, 3 & 4 around but what has happened to the larger populations of big fish, 7 pound up ?. I believe it has been on the decline for awhile now , could be wrong but don't think so!
Too me it seems that we as a group of fishermen will have more impact on the quality of our Delta fishery over a period of time as well as the increase in the fish chowder fishermen that i see on the bank with there 5 gal buckets lined up.
No one likes to see the Sea Lions eating the fish we like to catch and release, but over all I don't think it will have that much impact as we do.

Re: Tuck - Damn Sea Lions!
Dewayne, that same thing was going on during the guard in two prime areas of Franks Tract, one of which you were fishing with me. My team partner Brian Carpenter, Charlie Wier, and Jimmy Reese all witnessed the sea lions ripping thru the tules and eating bass. I must confess, I was on good fish and wanted to hang in there, but I senced our "great white" like opportunistic green fish felt they were now the hunted. I think they either scatterd or hunkered down. They went from opportunistic feeder to survival mode, and I felt they weren't catchable.
Short of having a pontoon boat release them, which is not always economically feasible, there may be another solution. Each team could take there catch back out to the river and disperse them 1 by 1. I'm not suggesting dumping your 5 sack at the 5mpm zone, but spreading them out and giving them a chance! This needs to be dealt with!

Short of having a pontoon boat release them, which is not always economically feasible, there may be another solution. Each team could take there catch back out to the river and disperse them 1 by 1. Re: Tuck - Damn Sea Lions!
Funny you should mention this 'ordeal'. While working the tulles by the wall in Franks yesterday I thought some sort of giant 'release pipe' of some sort was there as I saw all of this air coming up from nowhere to the surface. Then this big noise was made by something and I turned around and thought, at first, that Shamu's brother was emerging from the depths and heading out to the middle section- scarry it was.Dewayne wrote:I finally seen it with my own eyes, I was leary at first because I have watched them eat cats and stripers for years, but never LM.
Upon further gazing, the creature turned sideways on his next surfacing 10 yards further away and I saw it was actually a one or two ton sea lion with about a 20# carp in it's mouth. I was cheering it on, not thinking that it would also be bass hunting too. But I think there are more 20# carp than 5# bass and that carp may have a much poorer chance to escape it jaws, but I might give more credit to bass than they deserve.
Dewayne, you got a red boat? Saw someone cruise over with a partner or two from the wall out to check out the action that sea lion was causing after it left my area. So many seagulls were over it and the fish it was driving to the surface. I was solo in a red aluminum boat from 9 till 3 over there.

Re: Tuck - Damn Sea Lions!
Sea lion's can grow up to 1600 lbs. The average ones we see in the Delta are 400-500lbs. To sustain their weight they must eat 5-8% of their body weight per day.
500 lbs sea lion = 40 lbs of fish per day ( that's better than cooch's jig)
Just like any other animal the must be managed effectively or they will screw up the balance. Up in Oreagon on the Columbia river they are killing 85 sea lions each year to control the population and protect the salmon run.
Sounds like selling some hunter tags wouldn't be a bad idea!!

They don't eat the whole fish .... if even 1/2 of it !!markscolwell wrote:Sea lion's can grow up to 1600 lbs. The average ones we see in the Delta are 400-500lbs. To sustain their weight they must eat 5-8% of their body weight per day.

Saw a biggun in a slough yesterday -- And fishing sucked there for a 300 yard stretch. -- Once we were out of it's way it was on again.

Re: Tuck - Damn Sea Lions!
One thing I can honestly say I have never seen a Sea Lion eat out here on the Delta .... was a stupid, egg suckin' CARP !
I have watched the SL's try to bust up the bellies only on Sturgon up to 65" or so with ALOT of their catch going to waste as well in the Carquinez Straights.
Almost a daily basis from Sept- Jan on the dock that I sit on at work. They know how to work the shoals and the wiers through the pilings like they invented it themselves for the Stripers alone.
SMART ANIMALS that can find what they want in the MUDDIEST of water when they want to !!

Re: Tuck - Damn Sea Lions!
Living in Oregon I have seen first hand the damage the SL's do on the fishery. They come up the fish ladders at bonneville dam and eat the salmon by the TON's!! Not the entire fish either just a couple of big bites from the belly's of the hens. There was a video last year on the news of 2 SL's taking on a 12' Sturgon. You can guess who won that battle. And now just when we thought they were going to be able to turn those fat sacks of blubber into BBQ, the anti's squashed that. So ODFW spends money to trap them, and send them back to the ocean just to have them swim right back up to the dam. Yup our license fees hard at work.

Re: Tuck - Damn Sea Lions!
Would paint guns discourage them, or drive them away? If it annoys them, and they begin to associated paint guns with bass boats, maybe they can be "trained" to leave when fishing boats arrive.

Not sure if its legal to harrass them. Depending on the judge, a spot marker gun, might be interpreted as a "firearm" like a pellet gun.

Nothing cooks like a Treager!!!!
I am seriously envoius of that Treager Grill... Can't wait to use it again... Those Tri Tip roasts were awesome!!!! If anything can make a Sea LLion taste good, A treager is the grill to do it.
You can bet I'll be bringing an ice chest full of goodies to throw on that treager next time I come over Cooch...
Who knows... Might even have some Sea LLion steaks... LLOL
We'll definately have to have LoweLL sing again.. I was kinda partial to him singing Concrete Blond... ROTFLMAO!!!! He actually did a great job... The Hackster has a voice, he can sing in key, and has the hair to match... Who woulda thunk??? LOL
Good fishing Cooch,
Oh... Wait... in your case...

Hey from what I have heard the Polar bears up in Alaska are having a hard time finding food, lets ship a few thousand SL's up there for them to eat, we will be happy and the anti's will be happy.

Paintball guns are legal down south out on the ocean, so I assume that they are ok throughout Ca.
I talked to someone who soaked a fish in Habanero hot sauce for 10 minutes and tossed it out to the sea lion. He said he never saw him again the rest of the day.

That technique also works well on stray dogs that get into trash cans, too. Tabasco is good enough, howeverbaitfish wrote: I talked to someone who soaked a fish in Habanero hot sauce for 10 minutes and tossed it out to the sea lion. He said he never saw him again the rest of the day.
