Clear Lake

Clear Lake is at an elevation of 1,320 feet. It has 43,000 surface acres and 100 miles of shoreline. The lake is surrounded by resorts, many which have marinas and launch ramps.

There are also 11 free public ramps around the lake. Complete services are available in the city of Lakeport.

Clear Lake is California's largest natural lake. It's a shallow body of water with many grassy flats, brush covered banks and abundant tule growth. Much of it's shore is lined with privately-owned resorts, residences and boat docks. During seasonal weather fronts winds can create 3' to 4' waves in the open areas of the lake.

Clear Lake State Park offers camping with good launch and parking facilities.(707)279-4293

Report: My clients and I didn't see any other brave (stupid!) souls out on the lake last night. Wow, it was ugly - windy and cold. I was hoping the cloud cover would hold for a few hours - and it did. A father (1st time to Clear Lake) and son team left the dock with me about 4:30 pm and we tried to find water we could fish. Above the narrows was out of the question, so we worked the Clear Lake and Rattlesnake arms. As long as the clouds stuck around - for about 5 hrs, the bite was pretty good. It was exceptional when the younger man stuck his personal best about 8 pm - an 8 lb 11 oz pig, using a brush hog. What a gorgeous fish!!! She was the only really deep fish we could get to bite - probably 25 feet. Dad loved the lake and handled the weather fine. He only caught about 8 bass to 4 1/2 lbs, yea, he likes California! He has caught several big ones in his home state of Texas however. He wanted his first "10" but we couldn't pull it off. I earned my money working the Minn Kota last night - tried to fish a little - caught one on a D&M swim jig. My clients caught 14 or 15 total with their limit about 24 1/2 lbs! Once the stars were out totally, as predicted by "Guido the Guide", the bite totally died. We had bumpy ride back to the Oaks and fished some more - but only one more fish hooked and lost. We were happy to get into our warm vehicles! Great clients - hard working and lots of fun.

Tips: Look for calm water - good luck!! Actually the lake should settle down in a day or two. Watch out for fog now - usually settles over the lake about 3 am. Beware of shallow rock areas - be careful!! Probably because of the wind, our fish were pretty shallow, not much deeper than 20 feet. As I mentioned, the deep fish wouldn't bite. Not as many bites as previous trips, but they did take the baits a little better. Water is cooling off fast!
