Fern Ridge

Fern Ridge Lake is located at an elevation of 374 feet in Lane County . It has 9,000 surface acres. The Lake is small by most standards, about 30 miles of shoreline. The average depth is about 11 feet deep.

Fern Ridge Lake is 12 miles west of downtown Eugene. The dam is an earthfill structure with a gated concrete spillway for regulation of lake levels. The dam was completed in 1941 at a cost of $6 million. Six park sites and several remote access points around the lake offer a variety of day use recreation opportunities. A private concession on the peninsula at the south end of the lake has overnight camping sites.

The water level is kept as high as possible from April through September. The level usually drops 2-3 feet during the summer due to irrigation needs downstream. During winter, the level is lowered to provide storage capacity for flood control.

Extensive wetlands provide unique habitats for a variety of wildlife. Cereal grains and forage crops are planted on lands surrounding the lake to provide for wintering waterfowl populations.

Directions: From Eugene, 12 mi. W on OR 126.

Report: Fished ABA last month. Wanted to post since there seems to be little said about this lake.... Fished mostly wood, grass and rock banks on the west arm. (not sure the name) caught 5 fish for 6th place. caught most on jig's and sencos in brown color. Got five bites all day.

Tips: Fish slow and work your baits into 15 feet of water. Bite was sluggish. Good luck to all you tourney guys at the last event of the year.

Report: got a late start on Friday, but i got out on the water so that is all that matters i guess. Fished every bank i could, trolling motor on high! several nice crusers on the east side of the lake. moved to the west side of the lake around noon and stayed in the grass. landed several 4 pounders and one nice 6 pounder. the 6 pounder came off of a log and with a sinko. The rest came out of the grass with a 1/4 oz jig.

Tips: stay in the grass, all but one fish was in the grass. fish are spooky for some reason? stealth mode is how i work them.

Report: Went out for a couple of hours by the damn. I was casting a black/chartreuse 1/4oz stanley jig with a black and orange YUM craw on the back. Hooked up with one in the two hours I was there..he was about 2-3lbs.

Tips: I really like to fish the west-11th side in late March early April. Fish the channels with a chartreuse or bleeding shad color FAT RAP..SLOW..just enough to get to the bottom. Caught a few 6-7lbs there last year.

Spring: After the water hits 55deg. ease up on Royal Ave.(submerged)to the shallow tulles. The road is gravel and broken asphalt. Throw a jointed #7,9,or 11 Rapala, gold w/black back. Bounce off the tulles at the side or down the road. Don't retrieve faster than it takes to wake the bait. The bass (largemouth) stage on the sunken main channel bridge and come up on the road from pre-spawn to post-spawn from four feet deep to one foot deep, about a six hundred yard strip of spawning area. There have been many days, over the years when I have caught 40 to 50 bass in one pass. Bud Summer:
