HDS 7 Touch unexpected restarts every time I power it on

Post by Dagmandt »

Hi guys,

I have a couple problems I'd like some help with.

1. Every time I power my HDS7 up it unexpectedly crashes/restarts within a few seconds. I'm not sure what this is due to. Any ideas? Is this a known issue that can be fixed? I searched the forum but didn't find much. Also, something strange is I don't get a battery volt reading.

2. Looking at my sonar and down scan, there are BIG numbers for 0 and bottom depth which overlap the smaller numbers on the right side which indicate depth. They are redundant and looks terrible. I can't seem to find a way to get rid of them. Is there a way to do this?

Here is a capture of the numbers:

thanks,
Darren

On the broadband sonar screen, the small numbers on the right side of the pane indicate the Auto depth range the unit is in. There is no way to "get rid" of these.

I'm not sure what your unit is doing when you say it is restarting. I have never heard of this issue. When a unit "crashes" and shuts off, if something is terminally wrong, it won't come back on. As for the Volt reading you are looking for, any digital readings you want on each screen will need to be put on each screen via the "Overlay Data". When you open the overlay data, you can open GPS, Sonar, etc and the drop down menu that opens is all kinds of data that can be put on each page. Look through the menu and pick what information you will need on your screen.

A few clarifications:

1. My brand new console unit restarts up to 3 times every time I power it on after a few seconds or minutes. The screen goes black, I get the lowarnce splash screen, then it is on. Over and over. My even newer bow unit does the same thing but only once every time I power it on so far. My battery voltage is 12.45v.

2. Looking at my screen shot in my first post above you can see I have the data overlay for battery voltage already on the screen. It just doesn't read anything and I don't know why. Also, many times in the data overlay menu options for adding a new overlay, Batt is missing... gone, not available. This happens on both units and right now neither shows Batt as an option even though I've had it there before.

There are no known issues like you are talking about as far as I know. These concerns are best directed to the Lowrance Customer Care. Call them at 1-800-628-4487 and see if they have any new information about these two questions.

I talked to customer support the other day on this and they suggested a soft reset. I did that on both units and for the first time neither suddenly rebooted. I'm going to give it a week and if it doesn't resurface I'll call it a victory.

For the battery voltage issue I have a theory: With the latest software update I think they moved the battery voltage out of "Batt" -> "Voltage" to "Other" -> "Source Voltage". That explains the "Batt" menu disappearing on me and that the current data overlay for it did not work. I removed the data overlay and used the "other" menu item and it works now. Looks like the programmers forgot to take into account existing user configurations when they made the change.
