15.7 from So Cal lake

A 15 pounder would be a PB contender for most anglers, but for Jason "Jay" Saberon  it was just another good day on a San Diego lake.

Followers of Saberon's posts have seen quite a few of his catches, including his PB 16.2 largemouth from Miramar Lake, last year.

Last week, Saberon put another notch in his teener count with a 15.7, also from a San Diego lake.

THE BATTLE

"At 1:45 p.m., I parked at the lake at a spot I had giants chase the lure, the week before," described Saberon. "I walked up to the lake, to my spot, where if I get lucky with the wind, it will carry my swimbait back in this little finger. I made the perfect cast in the back, let it sink three seconds and stared winding it as slow as humanly possible."

As the retrieve brought his swimmer past a point of tules, Saberon  felt the thump of the bite and swung. "She started fighting and I started grinding her in, but I hadn't seen her, yet," he recalled.  "There were tules to my left and she had a good angle to just swim left and get stuck in 'em, because she was far out on a long cast. If she made that cut, she'd be buried in it. I chanced it and ripped her out. She jumped and I could see she was a monster.

"She was out in the open and managed to get hung up on one single tule right in front of me - stuck dangling mid-water column. I panic and almost jump in to get her. I pulled hard, one more time, pulling the tule out of the ground and she went right into the net - not as easy as I thought she would. I had to wiggle her into it."

CONDITIONS

Although the fishery shall remain nameless, Saberon described the conditions as a mainly sunny, 68 degree day, with water temps that varied from 64 to 66. "The wind was blowing to the east at 10 to 15 knots and the moon was just over half, almost 3/4, the prime big girl's moon," he added.

Saberon had on a trout Huddy ROF 5, with a single top hook and no stingers. He reported using a Phenix 800H with 20 lb Seaguar AbrazX.

At 28-years-old, Saberon has already accumulated more than two decades of bass chasing experience. "I have been fishing swimbaits, since I was 10, but more serious about it the last few," he said.
